In 2019, the first chairperson of the Port Barton Tourist's Service Cooperative set out with a vision aimed at transforming the local tourism landscape. Recognizing the challenges faced by independent boat operators amid rising government taxes and the slow processing of permits, he began gathering like-minded individuals to form a cohesive team. Their goal was to establish a fair scheme of tourist boat services that would foster equity and collaboration among local operators.
This innovative cooperative structure sought to harness the collective strength of its members to secure tax exemptions, streamline business operations, and facilitate the procurement of legal permits under a unified name. By pooling resources, they aimed to alleviate the financial burdens that individual operators experienced, enabling them to provide competitive pricing while enhancing the overall tourist experience in Port Barton.
Through diligent efforts and community engagement, the cooperative represents a bold step toward a sustainable, cooperative-driven tourism model that prioritizes fairness, efficiency, and the well-being of both the local workforce and visitors.
